Returning from Expatriation

Repatriation - for the Employee and Spouse

Repatriation can be a mixed experience. You might suffer from "reverse" cultural chock and not find it as exiting to come home as going out.

Depending on how long you have been away, you might not find things as they were and might have difficulties reconnect with your friends.

Your expat contract is assumed to terminate in 9 to 12 months. It is time to start thinking and planning for the time to come. Work and life circumstances will probably change dramatically for you and the family. Some of the classic concerns include:

If possible, would you and the family prefer to prolong the expat ?

If returning, what would you like to do ?

How do you reconnect with your friends and rejuvinate the personal network ?

What about your job possibilities ?

These are just some of the crucial themes to be handled prior to home-coming. Reintegrating can prove more difficult than expected. You and the family is returning from the longest possible "professional vacation abroad" to the "normal" life you left behind months back. You may find sharing the expat experiences with friends and family is difficult without sounding snobbish and prejudice. Changes in the political and public systems may rock your solid perception of "home sweet home".
